Parliament should no longer be abused

The National Movement for a Just Society issuing a special statement condemned Minister Prasanna Ranathunga’s insulation to religious leaders by misusing parliamentary privileges.

The statement issued by the Secretary General of the National Movement for a Just Society, Palitha Lihiniya Kumara states as follows.

The National Movement for a Just Society strongly condemns the statement made by Minister Prasanna Ranatunga that Buddhist monks, Catholics and Christian priests were the organizers of the catastrophic events that took place in this country on the 9th of May.

The statement made by the Minister, who is considered to be a leading politician representing the present government, under the guise of his parliamentary privileges is a reckless attempt to shift the responsibility from the real culprits to the clergy and laity of this country.

In fact, the cause of these destructive processes was the activities of the leading politicians of this country and their patron followers. It is now well known to the whole world from which place the well-organized mob came to attack  the most peaceful and just struggle based on Galle Face, came from and who facilitated that brutal attack.

Minister Prasanna Ranathunga should not forget that he was the in-charge of the police of the country when the attack took place.

Against such a backdrop, he should beg pardon from religious clergy and laity in this country as well as the people for making this irresponsible statement.  He should also abstain from further misuse of Parliament, the supreme body of the country, by respecting the judgment given to him by the courts of this country.
